Yak yak yak….all talk lots of action

September 2, 2010

yakIt is a sport practiced in the Indian hill resort of Manali,  where Tibetan Peter Dorje runs an operation dedicated to the most implausible extreme sport in the world: yak skiing. In winter, he takes up to five skiers and his herd of beasts to the hills above town, making overnight camp.

The sport involves a skier waiting at the bottom of a slope and a yak at the top of the hill; yak and skier are connected by means of a rope going around a pulley at the top of the hill. To engage the yak, the skier must shake (and swiftly put down) a bucket of pony nuts.

Crazy, yes. I think I will stick to the gondola.
